If you are a working from home guru but you have NO space, I have discovered the most amazing project that will TRANSFORM your life! And the best bit? It’s quick, it’s cheap, it’s easy, and it takes up almost NO room.
This project is the true essence of Hannah Montana herself: the best of both worlds! So, what is it? It’s a two-in-one shelf and desk!
What do you need?
How to make it:
1. The first step is to measure and cut your materials… in this case, it’s the planks of wood to make what will be the shelf and then the desk. So, when I did this, I measured the depth of my laptop and then made the depth of the wood to be a little bit bigger than that (maybe one or two cm).
2. Then draw a line down the middle as we will be cutting this piece in half (it will all make sense later)!
3. As for the width of the shelf/desk - it’s up to you! I made mine 80cm because that is the size of a standard desk.
4. Don’t forget to measure and cut the side pieces as well!
5. Now that everything is cut, take the side pieces and find the exact middle mark on one side. Then make a mark on the opposite side 1.5cm from the top. Connect these two marks together with a pen and cut along the line! (Remember to do this on both sides.)
6. If you place the two cut bits together again, and then pretend there is a hinge (spoiler alert, there will be one there later on!) on the bottom angle and fold it down, the lines should be flush together in one long diagonal line!
7. Go ahead and screw one part of the shelf/desk to the bottom bits of the cut side pieces on both sides.
8. Then screw the other part of the shelf/desk to the top bits of the cut side on both sides (it should be screwed together so that there is basically a plank of wood on the top as well as the bottom of this piece)!
9. In order for us to stick this masterpiece to the wall, cut and screw a back panel to the shelf! BUT remember to make this panel a little shorter than the other pieces, as this is going to act as a handle to transform it from a shelf to a desk!
10. To make it even EASIER to open, cut out a little section in the back middle of the top shelf (don’t forget to sand it)!
11. Now go over all the screws with wood filler to make it look BEAUTIFUL (and then sand it after)!
12. Go ahead and stain the wood to a shade of your choice that suits your home!
13. Remember I mentioned hinges earlier? It’s TIME! Add the hinges to where the side pieces are cut in half…
14. Then you can hang the shelf/desk and MARVEL at how cool it is!!
Working from home has never been so easy, am I right?!
