Hello again guys! I’m so excited about the project I am about to show you because it’s something I have never tried before… a ROCKING CHAIR!! And let me tell you, not only did I have the MOST fun making this, I am absolutely IN LOVE with it, and I use it ALL the time! I just know you will, too!
So, the inspiration for this piece is the Seatbelt Rocking Chair by Nuttapong Charoenkitivarakorn. This usually sells for $2,224, but I am going to show you how to make it less than a 10th of the price at around $100-$150! And the best bit? It only took around 3 hours to make!
What do you need?
How to make it:
1. To start, grab your plywood sheets and mark out 76x78cm on the first one. Then follow the measurements you can find on my Patreon to get all the crazy curves and difficult bits.
2. Then you want to mark up the inside line of the wood - go around the whole outline with a tape measure and mark up 10cm inside the initial line, then join up the dots - just like a kid's book!
3. Now we need to cut out this mad shape! To do this, first, make a hole in the wood with a drill, then when you can fit it in, use your jigsaw!
4. Once it’s all cut out, use the first one as a template for the second one - this way, you know it will be perfect! Just remember when you cut out the second one to cut INSIDE the line.
5. Go over the bottom of each cut-out with sandpaper (or a sanding machine if you have one) to make the rock nice and smoooooth!
6. Lay both cut-outs on top of each other, then drill a hole through both of them in each corner - this is where we are going to add in the wooden slats.
7. Now cut the slats to size - the bottom ones need to be 76cm and the top ones 68cm.
8. Then drill holes into both ends of each slat of wood – this will make it easier to drill into later!
9. For the next step, it would help you A LOT if you have a friend to assist as it is HARD doing it alone. That’s because you need someone to hold the structure while you screw it! One by one, go through and screw in each slat until you have a fully formed structure!
10. It’s FINALLY ribbon time!! Because you want it to be as secure as possible, staple one end of the ribbon many times (maybe even six or seven times) to the inside of one of the sides. Then hammer on top of the staples. Then wrap the ribbon round a little more and repeat this process once more.
11. After that, you can wrap around the entire structure! To get the signature look, make sure to twist the ribbon in the middle before wrapping it around the other side.
And TA-DA! You’re done! This was so much fun to make, so I hope it works just as well for you as it did for me!
