I am back for yet another DIY project in my series called ‘Can I Really Make That?’, and OH MY GOD you guys, this one was so hard. But let me tell you now, it was SO worth it! I’m so excited for you guys to make one of your own because the sense of accomplishment you will feel after is ELECTRIC! Also, it will transform your work desk and become a piece of art - how cool is that?!

This project is inspired by Robert Van Embricq’s Flow Wall Desk, so can I really make that? Absolutely I can! Let’s go!

What will you need?

• 30 x 3x3 squared wooden sticks
• A 3-inch rectangle plank of wood
• String
• A pencil
• A jigsaw
• A drill and screws
• SO many hinges
• A 1 metre metal pole
• router

Let’s make it!

1. First, get your plank of wood, pencil, and string. We need to make the plank into a semi-circle, and my best tip is to measure the plank, find the middle point, then tie the string around the pen and secure the other side of the string to the middle point of the wood. Now you have a homemade compass! Just draw your semi-circle, and it will be perfect!

2. Now the hard work starts - but don’t worry, I did the calculations for you! Mark on the plank of wood where the first two square sticks will go - right at the start of the semi-circle. After that, place the next stick 3cm further up the plank for the next four poles. Then three lots of 2cm, and finally 1cm for the rest until you get to the middle, and then to the same on the other side. This will ensure the arch flows perfectly at the top!

3. NOTE: with all the 3x3 sticks in place, the top will be rounded - don’t worry, we will cut them back later! In the meantime, draw a straight line across all the sticks from the shortest two so you know where to cut later!

4. After you’ve drawn where the sticks will go, use the jigsaw to cut it all out!

5. Place the sticks in the angles you’ve cut to double-check check they match.

6. For ease, mark both the sticks and the plank with letters, so you know where each bit goes when you connect them later.

7. Now for the hinges! Mark where each hinge needs to go on the jagged cutout plank and drill holes in the wood before putting the screws in and hinges on. Do this for the sticks, too. You want it so that the sticks fall downwards.

8. Next, you need to cut out four cm on the top of the outer four sticks so you can put hinges on those as well - these will be what secures the table to the wall! (These hinges should be put on in the opposite direction to the ones you did earlier!)

9. In order to make sure the sticks don’t fall on you when you’re using the table, we now need to add a way for a metal pole that secures to each of the sticks in the back. Measure out where it needs to go along the back and then draw a line between the two dots you should have on the back of each stick.

10. Now take some more string and create a loop that fits each of the lines you have on every stick. Secure the loop to the back of the wooden sticks.

11. At this stage, cut the top of the sticks where you marked them earlier, so you can finally see the arch shape they create when the table is open!

12. And now add a hole to the plank of wood that will be the desk - this is how you will take this from a masterpiece of art on the wall to be a masterpiece of art that is also furniture and practical! Kind of like a handle! (Create the hole near the stick end of the plank.)

13. You will 100% need someone to help you hang this on the wall because it will be HEAVY!

14. Finally, when the table is on the wall, thread the metal pole through the loops of string on the back, and it should be done!!
